• Shoulder Configurations: Built with raised ridges (shoulders) that press against the edge of the rail base. Baseplates can feature a single shoulder or a double shoulder to restrict lateral rail movement. 

• Pre-Drilled Holes: Cast with precise square or round holes to accommodate railroad spikes, anchor bolts, or lag screws that pin the plate down to wooden, concrete, or steel sleepers. 

• Canted Profile: Many modern baseplates are cast with a slight inward slope (often a 1:20 or 1:40 cant) to mirror the conical shape of train wheels, ensuring centered wheel-to-rail contact.
