S49 ribbed base plates (also known as 49E1 tie plates) are specialized track components used to support S49/49E1 rails, which have a base width of 125 mm and a weight of approximately 49.39 kg/m. These plates are manufactured according to the UIC 864-6 (or updated IRS 80864-6) technical specification for steel ribbed base plates.
The S49 series is categorized under the Rph 1 section profile. Dimensions and weights vary depending on the sleeper type (wood vs. concrete) and hole configuration:
Inclination: They typically feature a 1:20 or 1:40 inward inclination (cant) to ensure the rail head aligns correctly with the conical shape of train wheels.
Fixing Systems: S49 plates are a core part of the GEO (K-type) fastening system, where they are secured to wooden sleepers using four sleeper screws and to the rail using clamp plates and bolts.
Hole Variations:
4 Holes: Commonly used on wooden sleepers to provide extra stability and resist lateral forces in curves.
2 Holes: Standard for concrete sleepers or specific industrial track applications.
Material: Generally produced from high-carbon forged steel or ductile iron (such as QT500-7) to meet high tensile strength and wear resistance requirements.
Signum Rail Fasteners specializes in rail tie plates, specifically for 115RE, 136RE, s49, UIC60 rail sections. We currently support North American and European infrastructure projects by providing forged, rolled and cast plates. We’d love to send over our latest technical data sheets and lead times for your maintenance cycle if you need.
