Track bolts (or rail bolts) are critical fasteners used to securely join rail fish plates, fix steel rails to sleepers, and reinforce tracks. Engineered from hardened, anti-rust steel, these track bolts are designed to withstand massive train loads and resist vibration-induced loosening.

Common Types of Track Bolts

• Button Head Oval Neck (BHON) Bolts: The industry standard for railroad rail joint connections. The oval neck fits into a matching oval hole on the joint bar to prevent the bolt from turning when tightening the nut. 

• Fang Bolts (Rail Anchor Bolts): Specialized bolts featuring fanged nuts that bite into the lower surface of wooden or concrete sleepers, providing superior holding power on sharp curves or switch points. 

• T-Head & Diamond Neck Bolts: Custom variations used for specialized baseplates, clip assemblies, or specific sleeper types.

Essential Components

A standard track bolt assembly relies on a three-part system to prevent displacement from severe vibrations: 

• The Bolt: Threaded and forged to international standards like AREMA or ASTM.

• The Nut: A heavy hex or heavy square nut used to lock the fastening tightly against the rail.

• The Lock Washer: Spring washersare installed to maintain constant tension and prevent the nut from backing off over time.

Fastening Standards & Installation

• Torque & Tension: Joint bar bolts must be tightened to approximately $400 ft-lbs of torque, which generates between 25,000 and 30,000 pounds of tension. 

• Alternating Pattern: Bolts and nuts should be installed in an alternating pattern (inside and outside of the rail) to ensure an even distribution of holding force.
