The Fe6 double spring washer (also known as a double coil helical spring washer or Fe6 double elastic washer) is a specialized component widely used in railway track fastening systems to ensure the stability and integrity of bolted connections.

The primary purpose of the Fe6 double spring washer in the railway system is to provide an elastic force that helps to:

Prevent loosening: It maintains constant clamping pressure (preload) on the rail bolts and nuts, counteracting the significant vibrations, dynamic loads, and impacts caused by passing trains.

Accommodate movement: The double-coil design offers increased spring deflection, which helps compensate for material expansion or contraction (e.g., in wooden sleepers or due to thermal changes) and prevents the loosening of hardware that can cause rail interference.

Absorb shock: It absorbs micro-movements and shocks, reducing the risk of fatigue failure in the bolted joint. 

Key Specifications

Material: Typically made from high-quality spring steel such as 60Si2Mn or 65Mn to ensure excellent elasticity, high tensile strength, and fatigue resistance. 38Si7 is also available wit higher price.

Hardness: The required hardness usually falls within the range of HRC43-49.

Compression: A common specification requires the washer to have a minimum height of 17.8 mm after sustaining a force of 40 kN for 10 seconds.

Dimensions: A common specification is 45*25*6mm, with a 25mm inner dimension (ID).

Standards: Manufactured according to various international railway standards, including UIC (e.g., UIC864-3), AREMA, BS, DIN, and ISO, ensuring compatibility and quality assurance.

Finish: Available in various finishes to enhance corrosion resistance, such as plain, black oxide, zinc plating, gray phosphate, or hot-dip galvanizing (HDG). 

Application

The Fe6 double spring washer is used in conjunction with rail bolts, nuts, and sometimes flat washers as part of the complete rail fastening assembly. Proper installation and torquing are crucial to ensure optimal performance and long-term joint integrity in demanding railway environments.
