AREMA tie plates, also know as AREMA base plates, are type of rail tie plates,which are mainly used in the the U.S. market. The common sizes of AREM tie plates include 11 inches, 14 inches and 14-3/4 inches. They are usually used for 5-1/2 inches or 6 inch rail base width.
An AREMA tie plate is a standardized steel plate used in American railway construction by the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) to increase the bearing area between a rail and the wooden sleeper (tie), thereby distributing the train's weight, maintaining correct rail gauge, and extending the life of the tie. These plates are fastened to the tie with spikes or bolts, and different AREMA plan numbers and sizes are used for various rail sections.
