Elastic railway clips are primarily made from spring steel bars using a multi-step hot forging process, followed by specific heat treatments to achieve the required elasticity and strength. Elastic railway clips are also know as ERC clips.
The general manufacturing process of Elastic Railway Clips:
Raw Material: High-quality spring steel bars, often grades like 60Si2MnA or 38Si7, are used for their inherent elastic properties when heat-treated.
Shearing: The long spring steel bars are cut to the precise length required for the specific type of rail clip being manufactured.
Heating: The sheared steel pieces are heated in a furnace to a specific forging temperature, typically between 950°C and 1000°C (1742°F to 1832°F). Care is taken to avoid overheating, which can lead to decarburization.
Forming: The heated bar is transferred to a power press where it is hot-forged into the final, characteristic shape using a series of molds and fixtures. This process ensures a uniform microstructure in the finished product.
Hardening (Quenching): The hot, forged clips are then rapidly cooled by immersion in a quenching oil bath. This process increases the hardness of the steel.
Tempering: After quenching, the clips are tempered at a specific temperature range (around 350°C to 500°C or 662°F to 932°F, depending on the exact material and desired properties) for a set period. Tempering is crucial for achieving the appropriate toughness and the necessary spring properties (elasticity) for the clips to function effectively on the railway track.
Inspection: The finished clips undergo rigorous quality control tests, which may include checks for dimensional accuracy, hardness, fatigue resistance, and load-bearing capacity, to ensure they meet required specifications .
Surface Treatment and Packing: The clips may receive a surface treatment like oiling, black oxide coating, or painting for corrosion resistance. They are then packed for delivery.
