TBM gantry sleepers (or Tunnel Boring Machine sleepers) are heavy-duty, custom-engineered rail supports designed to carry the massive weight of a TBM's "trailing gear" as it advances through a tunnel. These sleepers must withstand extreme point loads from trailing gantries—which can extend over 100 meters and house essential equipment like control rooms, ventilation, and grout systems—while adapting to the curved floor of the tunnel.
Curved Profiles: Signum Rail Fastening produces sleepers bent or shaped to match the specific diameter of the tunnel lining.
Material: They are predominantly made of steel plates or channel steel. Steel is preferred because it offers a high strength-to-weight ratio, allowing for easier transport in confined spaces and reusability across different project stages.
Custom Configurations:
Single-Part Design: A single sleeper that spans the entire distance under the gantry.
Locking Systems: Often connected using specialized locking pins to ensure the track remains stable under the vibration and high thrust of the boring process.
Load Distribution: They evenly distribute the weight of the TBM backup gantries (which can weigh hundreds of tons) onto the tunnel floor, protecting the concrete segments from damage.
Alignment Retention: They maintain accurate track alignment for the transport of technical equipment, tunnel segments, and waste rock removal trolleys.
Temporary Support: Unlike permanent rail systems, TBM sleepers are often designed for easy disassembly once the tunnel boring is complete. In some cases, specialized gantry machines are used specifically to remove these rails and sleepers after the TBM has finished its work.
